At Deerfield, you’ll find a lifestyle that suits your needs from a variety of independent living options that include elegant apartments, cluster homes and cottages. Dining options include the casual Bistro or the more formal Canterbury Room, both catering to the most discerning tastes. Activities abound here, with wine and cheese gatherings, bridge, hiking, and water aerobics and swimming at our state-of-the-art aquatic center.

You’ll find new friends and fellowship here in our diverse community of faith, along with all the conveniences of your hometown including a bank, a beauty and barber salon and a convenience store. With so little reason to leave home you’ll have the peace of mind to enjoy the secure and comfortable retirement of your dreams.

With 77 cottages, 170 apartments, 8 villas and 13 cluster homes, Deerfield provides a number of choices for residences in independent living. Deerfield offers two mid-rise apartment buildings, 57 new cottages and eight villas, along with the unique blend of existing cottages and cluster homes in the charming St. Giles neighborhood, the original Deerfield.

Cottages

Deerfield’s cottages range in size from smaller ones in the original St. Giles neighborhood to the newer, larger cottages built during the expansion in the ’90s.

Cottages feature wall-to-wall carpeting, numerous closets and storage areas, fully-equipped kitchens, utility rooms, washer and dryer, bathrooms with tub and shower and vanities, emergency call system with 24-hour security and emergency health care assistance, fire and smoke detectors, individualized heating and air-conditioning systems for each residence, lever door handles, pre-wired cable, telephone and computer modem outlets, and a patio or deck.

Because the St. Giles cottages were built from individual floor plans over a number of years, they vary in design from the newer homes, although most of the amenities and all of the security devices are present.

Residents may reflect their own personal tastes in their furnishings and decorating; however, any structural changes must be approved by management and are the financial responsibility of the resident.

Villas

The villas are Deerfield’s venture into duplex living. Connected at the garage wall, the villas have around 1600-1650 square feet of living space, with the option of adding additional square footage for a great room.

The villas feature wall-to-wall carpeting, numerous closets and storage areas, fully-equipped kitchens, utility rooms, washer and dryer, bathrooms with tub and shower and vanities, emergency call system with 24-hour security and emergency health care assistance, fire and smoke detectors, individualized heating and air-conditioning systems for each residence, lever door handles, pre-wired cable, telephone and computer modem outlets, and a deck.

Apartments

Deerfield’s apartments, housed in Timson and Henry Halls, range in square footage from 800 to 1612, with eight different floor plans.

The apartments feature 9-foot ceilings, wall-to-wall carpeting, numerous closets and storage areas, fully-equipped kitchens, utility rooms, washer and dryer, bathrooms with shower and/ or tub and vanities, emergency call system with 24-hour security and emergency health care assistance, fire and smoke detectors, individualized heating and air-conditioning systems for each residence, lever door handles, pre-wired cable, telephone and computer modem outlets, and a patio or balcony.

Cluster Homes

Deerfield’s cluster homes, found in the St. Giles neighborhood, are separate residences with outside entrances clustered in one of three buildings. The cluster homes have been newly refurbished to complement the arts and crafts look of the recent expansion.

The homes feature wall-to-wall carpeting, numerous closets and storage areas, fully-equipped kitchens, utility rooms, washer and dryer, bathrooms with tub and/or shower and vanities, emergency call system with 24-hour security and emergency health care assistance, fire and smoke detectors, individualized heating and air-conditioning systems for each residence, lever door handles, pre-wired cable, telephone and computer modem outlets, and a patio or deck.

Activities & Events

Deerfield’s residents are an active and involved group, and the weekly calendar is filled with activities…. from hiking the beautiful Western North Carolina mountains to playing bridge; from investment club meetings to croquet challenge matches; from aquatic therapy to yoga, watercolor classes to College for Senior classes. We take full advantage of the wonders that our region has to offer. The Deerfield motor coach can be found parked outside the Brevard Music Festival, Flat Rock Playhouse, the Biltmore Estate, and The North Carolina Arboretum, among others.

Social / Spiritual / Educational Programs

At Deerfield there’s never a reason to have nothing to do, unless that is what you desire! Our residents find fulfillment both within our community of Deerfield as well as the community at large with abundant opportunities for social, spiritual and educational interaction.

Deerfield residents also serve the Asheville community by volunteering their time and talents to serve on local boards, build houses for Habitat For Humanity, deliver Meals On Wheels and offer assistance at The Council on Aging, housed at St. Giles Chapel. Wednesday Rotary Club meetings at Deerfield provide another opportunity for service.
Check out our Event Calendar to see the many activities our residents are involved in. Here’s a sampling:

SOCIAL EVENTS

Deerfield provides transportation to seasonal performances at Flat Rock Playhouse, The Asheville Symphony, Asheville Chamber Music Ensemble, Asheville Choral Society, Asheville Community Theater and other arts and cultural events.

Residents enjoy games and activities including men’s and women’s poker, bridge, bingo, croquet, and bocce ball. Special entertainment events are planned each month on Deerfield Day, often in conjunction with a theme dinner at the Bistro. Deerfield Day often includes a dance band, and we celebrate residents’ birthdays and anniversaries for the month, as well as welcoming new residents.

SPIRITUAL PROGRAMS

Morgan Gardner, our Chaplain, conducts services at St. Giles Chapel every Sunday at 11am and in the Healthcare dining room at 9:30am. Services are also held on Wednesdays at 11am in Healthcare and 4:30pm in the Chapel. Deerfield’s part-time Chaplain, Anita Sayles, leads special worship services, Bible and religious study classes, and shares Morgan’s duties of pastoral care and visitation.

The beautiful St. Giles Chapel is open daily from 9am to 5pm for contemplation and prayer, and hosts a prayer group meeting weekly. Adjacent to the Chapel is the Memorial Garden, where paths wind through native rhododendron to a gentle waterfall and unadorned benches—perfect for listening to bird song or quiet meditation.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Deerfield residents’ diverse interests are reflected in the broad range of classes offered on our campus. You’ll find interest groups with such varied topics as art, dancing, books, investing, needleworking and woodworking to name just a few. Fitness classes include Tai Chi, Pilates, and yoga, and the Aquatic Center offers a range of swimming and water-fitness classes weekly. Visit the Event Calendar to see what’s upcoming.
